Budget But Well Placed for Sightseeing

Stayed at The Royal Hotel (across from Sanam Luang park)in the Old City area of Bangkok for total of 6 nights as part of an Explore Worldwide trip. Wouldn't hesitate to go back, wouldn't consider anywhere else. Excellent location within 10 mins walking distance of Grand Palace, Wat Po (Temple of Reclining Buddha), Wat Po Thai Traditional School of Massage, National Museum. Also 10 mins from Khao San Road, heart of backpacker district, for shopping, value internet access, street food, lively bars. You will not be bored if you stay here! Hotel is tourist class, friendly and relaxed with mix of clientele. 7/11 store round corner for essentials, beer, water, snacks (all of which can be brought back into hotel with no problem)Average nightly rate in high season Nov - Feb)is £18 UK pounds sterling for which you will get large clean bathroom with bath/overhead shower, air con, breakfast. Some rooms with balcony access. Small but clean pool, with sunbeds and showers - popular but never noisy. Very easy to hire taxis/tuk tuks from outside hotel, and there is a service desk which can book trips, trains, etc. Money exchange available, and reception will break high denomination notes for you at no charge. Reliable laundry service available, but allow a couple of days. Decor a litte tired and not 100% spotless but cheap, reliable, comfortable place to base yourself in a charming, bustling city. Excellent local restaurant Sky High, 2 mins walk from hotel, mostly frequented by Thais, but offer friendly welcome to all. Great food, extensive menu, great prices. Be aware, you will see people living from their cars and on the street if you walk round to the 7/11 which is upsetting, but this is the reality for some in Bangkok. If you want a Western experience of the city then this may not be the hotel or district for you, but if you want to be immersed in the Thai culture, and want to fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of the city you will love The Royal. I stayed two years ago and still miss the place! Wherever you stay, enjoy your visit!

Pros

10 minute walk from main sights, shopping, excellent local transport, friendly helpful staff.

Cons
