The house reef is excellent..an unforgetable moment and so relaxing to watch hundreds of fish swimming..to be honest it was my first time and not the last,I have fell in love with that experience.

Good

Our bungalow was a few steps from the beach with a good sea view from the veranda. The bath towels are changed daily. The rooms are basic and the bed is very comfortable.

The food was good too: Breakfast is cereal, breads, omelets, fruit, toast and a small selection of cooked stuff. Lunch is soup, salads, a variety of fish/meat to finish off. Excellent service.

Equator village, HORRIBLE!!

Do not go to Equator Village, there are so many things wrong with it.

-massages were done by unqualified people, Overpriced
-flies on the food, in the eating area, constantly
-brown water from the taps in the rooms, no shower pressure
-toilet barely flushed in room
-pool bar was not open for 2 weeks, May 2007
-told we must give tips, salary depends on it
-wasp nests all around pool area
-was attacked by wasps nest and no medical service on hotel site, no first aid kit
-buffet selection was horrible, food would run out, halfway through dinner service
-ice cream for dessert was served out of a cooler
-bats flew all around the pool area
-no nightly entertainment
-overpriced laundry, came back smelling worse
-overpriced vacation, complete disappointment

I would never recommend this hotel, it was pitiful, especially for the price, we were robbed. Definetly not a 3 star, generously giving it a 1, that is being very generous.

Sincerely, Canada

Cons

All of the above

A "different" side of the Maldives

The Equator Village Hotel is next to the beach on the small Maldivian island of Gan and is actually in the Southern hemisphere as you have to cross the equator to get there.. The unusual thing about this hotel is that it used to be an RAF station until 1977. In fact the bar and restaurant building was the segeants mess. The hotel rooms are basic, very nice, comfortable and clean. They are all bungalow type rooms set amongst gardens with well established plants and trees.
The swimming pool is superb and quite large with a swim up bar. There is also a spa fo those needing a little pampering.
So why is this "different" First you can leave the island of Gan and go exploring without going on a boat , those of you who have been to other islands will know that this is not usually possible. Gan is linked to the other islands in the Addu Atoll by a set of causeways, and you can hire bicycles from the hotel free of charge. We did this and spent a very enjoyable, if somewhat hot, day exploring the different islands.
Also the flight from Male down to Gan is quite an experience and you are presented with a cetificate for "crossing the Equator".
The Island of Gan still bears the marks of its military past, but most of the buildings are now being used by the local people.
There are wrecks of sunken naval ships to explore while diving
If you do intend to visit Gan I should go sooner rather than later. When the RAF were there they built an airport which the Maldivians are now developing into and Internaional airport and direct flights from the UK start next year. A new hotel is also nearly complete on the nearby island of willingilli. While these will certainly improve the area. In some respects it will lose its quaintness and "difference" so go NOW!

Pros

The history behind the hotel. The pool. The staff(very friendly

Cons

cant think of any
