Detailed review
I have stayed at this hotel several times and it has always been excellent. The rooms are particuarly good and the service is very attentive. This time I had my 10 month daughter with me and there were two things that struck me - the hotel is VERY pram unfriendly - there are no ramps, lots of stairs and the cobbled pathways around the pool area make it quite difficult. That being said I dont think the "family with small children" is their main target market.I also noticed that the price of food and drink in the restaurants and the spa treatments had gone up significantly which can make it a very expensive stay indeed. We had dinner at the beautiful Chateau restaurant the one night which was amazing - the food was superb and the service was discrete and friendly. Overall the hotel is still a romantic, colonial styled boutique hotel set in lush tropical gardens that I can highly recommend for a quiet break.
Quiet, beautiful setting
Drinks are expensive

Posted by Julia - 01/04/08 Lucky you - Several times at this hotel, you are lucky. As always in Mauritius, the hotel is expensive and so is the rest (drinks, golf fee...).Do you remember if the green fees are included ?

The Telfair is a French Colonial themed resort hotel. It is very stylish and upmarket in a romantic and relaxed setting. Even the standard rooms are outstanding and you dont necessarily feel cheated if you get a river view instead of a sea front view. The hotel is smaller than the typical Mauritius resort hotel which I like and the service is generall friendly and efficient. It is however more suited to honeymooners and smaller family groups as they struggle to cater for large groups in the restaurants. I have stayed there more than once now and have found the food to be generally excellent. I also like their concept of a la carte dining on limited menus rather than a "free for all" buffet. As the hotel is quite remote it is more suited to a quiet, intimate holiday where the focus is on relaxing rather than fast pace action and and varied "clubmed" entertainment. There is a fantastic golf course within the complex which has an amazing old colonial house converted into a restaurant where you can have afternoon tea under the trees or a very 5 star dinner. It is worth it.
Romantic setting, friendly service, outstanding decor and rooms, good food
I dont think it has any particular weakness. You always take a chance on the weather!
This is a beautiful part of Mauritius, the south. The beach and the sea are really nice. The junior suites are decorated in colonial mauritian style as the rest of the hotel. The nicest ones are the sea view with direct access to the beach. Food is ok. Breakfast was a bit of a disaster. We were four people ordering english breakfast and we managed to have four different plates... but the taste was good. There is a lovely spa but a bit expensive. If you are a golf lover you can go and play at the Bel Ombre golf course. If you are a fan of afternoon teas you can enjoy one in a beautiful setting as it is at the Bel Ombre restaurant.Good babysitting service even if expensive
views and sea
it is a bit remote there are only hotels in the area

Apparently it is very windy on the South Coast in winter time but we were lucky because yes it was windy but it was also very sunny. Stunning views on the waves breaking on the reef. The setting is honestly beautiful. The elegant colonial style from the entrance to the restaurant to the rooms... a beautiful hotel.Dinner was not great but the breakfast buffet was, like almost everywhere in Mauritius, very extensive. The Six Senses Spa is one of the most beautiful I've seen and definitely worth trying.Overall wonderful.
